12 August: a syzygy over Ibiza

Some evenings the machinery of the heavens stops hiding itself. On 12 August, for a little over a minute, it will stop hiding over Ibiza: the Sun, the Moon and the Earth will fall onto a single straight line, and the day will go dark at the shore. The Greeks had a word for such an alignment — συζυγία, syzygy — the yoking-together of bodies that, brought into one line, make something none of them could alone. It is the word we took for the studio’s name; on the 12th the sky will spell it out.

We build for the same reason we will stand on a cliff that evening — for the moment when separate things come into proportion and something quiet and whole appears. Here is what will happen, and why it can happen at all.

A coincidence of proportion

A solar eclipse is the Moon passing exactly in front of the Sun. That it can cover the Sun at all is one of the quiet wonders of our sky. The Sun is some four hundred times wider than the Moon — and, as it happens, some four hundred times farther away. The two coincidences cancel, and the great star and the small stone are drawn on the eye to the same size, each filling the same narrow cone of sight. Nothing requires this; it simply, for now, is so. When the line runs true enough, the Moon’s shadow falls across the Earth and the disk goes out — total here, partial there, according to where you stand. An eclipse is the solar system showing its working: orbits that cross at appointed points, and a geometry that, only now and then, consents.

What the ancients saw

Long before the mechanism was understood, an eclipse was read as a message — a sign, an omen, a turning. The astrologers set this one in Leo, the sign of the single voice and its making, with Aquarius facing it across the sky, the sign of the many and the common good; and they read the meeting of the two as a call to bring one’s own light back into tune with others’. One need not hold the doctrine to feel the pull of the image. For a few minutes the familiar sky is rearranged, and we are reminded of our place inside a far larger order — the order Pythagoras heard as proportion and named the music of the spheres: a cosmos held, like a building or a chord, by the right relation of its parts.

Temples of light

Long before the telescope, builders were astronomers. They learned the calendar of the sky and set their stones to it, so that on one chosen morning the architecture itself would speak. Archaeoastronomers borrow a word for such moments — hierophany, a showing of the sacred: the play of light and shadow that crosses a building only when the heavens stand in one particular place. At Abu Simbel a shaft of sun runs sixty metres down a corridor twice a year to fall on the gods Ramses set in the dark — all but Ptah, lord of the underworld, left in shadow. At Newgrange, older than the pyramids, the midwinter dawn slips through a slot above the door and travels the length of the passage to light the chamber for a few minutes. The Maya wrote the equinox into the stair of El Castillo, where light and shadow let a serpent descend; Rome opened the Pantheon to the sky through a single round eye.

An eclipse cannot be built for — its shadow falls in a different place each time, and the ancients could foretell its hour but never quite its ground. Yet it belongs to the same longing: to bring the building, and the body within it, into line with the order overhead. It is a kinship our own age still feels — James Turrell has spent a lifetime making rooms whose open eye frames the sky, descendants, he says, of Newgrange and Abu Simbel.

The shadows of an eclipse

Watch the ground, not only the sky. As the Moon pares the Sun down to a crescent, the light that reaches the earth turns strange and lovely. Every small gap — between the leaves of a tree, between laced fingers — becomes a pinhole, and casts not a round spot but a tiny crescent: the dappled shade beneath a tree fills with hundreds of little eclipsed suns. Shadows everywhere grow unnaturally sharp, for the source of light has shrunk almost to a line. In the last seconds before totality, faint ripples — the shadow bands — may race across a pale wall, the final thread of sunlight trembling in the air. And then the greatest shadow of all arrives: the Moon’s own umbra, sweeping in from the west at more than 1,700 km/h, a wall of dusk that drops the day into a brief, 360-degree twilight.

Why a builder watches

An architect spends his life on alignment — of structure and light, of part to part and part to whole, of a building to the ground beneath it and the sky it answers to. The studio is named for the rarest alignment of all, the syzygy: the instant three bodies fall into one line and the heavens, briefly, keep time. On 12 August that instant will be visible from our own island. We will be watching.

A note for the evening of the 12th

In Ibiza the partial phase begins near 19:39; totality comes around 20:33 and holds for a little over a minute; all is over by about 20:52 (local time). The Sun will be low — the eclipse falls just before sunset — which is its own kind of gift: look for an open horizon to the west and north-west, from a cliff, a coastal lookout, an open beach or a high point of the island. And a word of care — through every partial phase the Sun must be met only through certified eclipse filters; the single minute of totality is the one moment it is safe to look upon with the naked eye, and the one worth crossing the island for.
